How to Care for Caladium Plants at Home

Caladium plants are known for their vibrant, heart-shaped leaves in shades of pink, red, green, and white. While they’re stunning, they do require a bit of attention to thrive. Here's how to keep your Caladium plants healthy and colorful:

1. Light

Caladiums prefer bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch their delicate leaves, while too little light may cause colors to fade. Varieties with deeper colors can handle slightly more shade, but aim for filtered light for best results.

2. Watering

Caladiums like consistently moist soil but hate sitting in water. Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. During their active growing season (spring and summer), keep the soil evenly moist. In autumn and winter, reduce watering as the plant goes dormant.

3. Humidity

As tropical plants, Caladiums thrive in humid environments. Mist their leaves regularly, or place a tray of water nearby to increase moisture in the air. Bathrooms and kitchens can provide naturally higher humidity levels.

4. Soil

Caladiums need well-draining, rich soil. A mix of potting soil, peat moss, and perlite provides the right balance of moisture retention and drainage.

5. Feeding

During the growing season, feed your Caladium every 4-6 weeks with a diluted liquid fertilizer. Avoid overfeeding, as excessive nutrients can damage the plant.

6. Temperature

Caladiums prefer warm conditions. Keep them in temperatures between 18-27°C and avoid placing them near cold drafts or air conditioning vents.

7. Dormancy

In cooler months, Caladiums naturally enter a dormant period. The leaves may die back completely — this is normal. Reduce watering and stop feeding during this phase. Once spring arrives, resume regular care as new growth appears.

8. Pruning and Cleaning

Remove dead or damaged leaves to encourage fresh growth. Regularly dust the leaves to keep them looking their best.

9. Repotting

Caladiums should be repotted every 1-2 years or when they outgrow their pot. Choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent root rot.
